
Dovydas Šulskis is a prodigious jazz musician who began his musical journey at the tender age of seven at the Kretinga Art School. Fueled by an insatiable passion for music, he continued his formal education at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, where he earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Jazz Drumming, solidifying his foundation in the art form.
Throughout his academic career, Dovydas honed his craft by immersing himself in various musical styles and collaborating with a wide range of musicians. His musical odyssey led him to spend two years as a percussionist in the esteemed Palanga Wind Orchestra, where
he delved into the intricacies of classical music, before seamlessly transitioning into Lithuania's vibrant pop, rock and jazz scenes as a sought-after session musician.
In 2023, Dovydas' exceptional talent was duly recognized when he won the coveted first prize at the prestigious Drumday'23 competition, a testament to his prowess as a groundbreaking Lithuanian jazz drummer. This victory catapulted him into the spotlight and earned him recognition as a formidable force in the Baltic Drummers League.
More recently, Dovydas has ventured into the realm of original composition, working with his acclaimed trio, Duck Saved Jones, alongside the talented Arturs Duckis on bass and Andrius Savcenko on keyboards. Formed during his tenure at LMTA, this dynamic ensemble has embarked on three exhilarating tours of Europe, captivating audiences with their innovative fusion of jazz and hip-hop.
In addition to his performing endeavors, Dovydas is deeply committed to nurturing the jazz community as a member of the board of the Lithuanian Jazz Union since 2023. He actively takes part in many music events, projects and festivals across Europe, including Vilnius MAMA Jazz, Vilnius Jazz, U May Swings, Operetė Kauno Pilyje, Sound City, Summer of Wind Band, MCC Palanga, Amber Wind and the Soulkrasti Baltics Drummers league.
Dovydas' distinctive playing style is a testament to his eclectic influences, drawing inspiration from his mentor Arkady Gotesman as well as renowned drummers such as JD Beck, Blaque Dynamite, Tony Williams, Eric Harland and Marcus Gilmore. His seamless fusion of contemporary modern jazz and hip-hop elements reflects the rich tapestry of the Lithuanian music scene, creating a sonic landscape that is as innovative as it is compelling.
Currently, Dovydas is an integral member of several esteemed musical ensembles, including the Vilnius Jazz Ensemble, Duck Saved Jones, Nėris Jazz Sextet, Pavel Arakelian and the Outsiders, Basement Jazz Crew, KJ Collective, The Schwings Band, as well as the Martynas Šerpytis Quintet.
